What is povidone iodine and what are its uses:
Povidone-iodine kills a wide range of germs including bacteria, viruses, fungi and simple organisms. Povidone iodine is used for the prevention and treatment of skin infections such as cold sores, cuts, abrasions and abrasions.
Do not use povidone iodine:
• If you are allergic to povidone iodine or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
• If you currently have or have ever had a thyroid problem, including swelling (nodular goiter, endemic goiter or Hashimoto's thyroiditis), as using this medicine in these conditions can further affect your Thyroid function
• If you are currently being treated for depression with lithium because this type of medication can interact with povidone-iodine to affect thyroid function
• On children under the age of two.
Warnings and precautions:
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking povidone iodine:
• If your skin is broken (for example, by a burn) using povidone iodine in these circumstances may cause toxic levels of iodine to be absorbed into the blood
• If you currently have or have ever had a kidney problem, using povidone iodine in these conditions may cause toxic levels of iodine to be absorbed into the blood.
Possible side effects of povidone iodine:
Applying very large amounts of medications containing povidone-iodine, or using such products over a long period of time, may cause thyroid disorders (symptoms of which include weight loss, increased appetite, sweating, or lack of energy and weight gain) Other reported effects These are increased amounts of acid in the blood (the main symptoms are shortness of breath, confusion, and lethargy) and kidney failure (symptoms include difficulty urinating, thirst, dry mouth, and pain on one side of your back).
Other medicines and povidone-iodine:
Lithium (to treat depression) can interact with povidone-iodine to affect thyroid function. Therefore, concurrent use should be avoided.
How to use povidone iodine:
Adults, the elderly, and children over the age of two:
Apply directly to the affected area of skin once or twice daily as directed. Leave to dry, and cover with a bandage if desired.
It should not be used by children under two years of age
How to store povidone iodine:
• Flammable: Store away from sources of ignition.
• Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
• Do not use povidone iodine after the expiry date stated on the label. The expiry date refers to the last day of the same month.
• Must be stored at a temperature below 25 degrees Celsius.
